Since last week, we have changed the login mechanism for Matrix. As we did a few months ago with the Cloud, we have also integrated Matrix with the unified login (Single Sign-on).
TL;DR: On 27.06.2024, all clients will get logged out of the cloud and have to login again. Twofactor authentication needs to be setup again as well.
With a systemli account you get access to different services: mail, cloud and matrix. The fact that you can login to all of them with the same username and password often causes confusion. And for us admins the current integrations imposed some technical problems as well.
In November 2023, it became public that the largest Russian Jabber server (jabber.ru) was the target of a machine-in-the-middle attack (MITM). This involved redirecting traffic from the servers, which allowed the attackers to issue valid TLS certificates and thereby capture the contents of the Jabber server. What is particularly sensitive is the fact that the servers are hosted in Germany. This gave us the impetus to introduce a new security measure that will make such attacks on systemli.org services and websites much more difficult.
Ivan, an anarchist who has been in pre-trial detention in France for some time, reported in a letter that French police were able to gain access to the contents of his laptop.1 The laptop in question had an encrypted Ubuntu Linux installed. Another device with Windows installed and encrypted with Bitlocker could not be accessed. Ivan explained in his letter that he had used a 20-digit password consisting of letters, numbers and special characters for the system.
For a long time, Jabber/XMPP was an important platform for many for encrypted communication without monitoring. Today, it falls far behind other encrypted messengers in many respects, and self-evident features like encrypted group chats or standard encryption are only partially or clumsily implemented by many client apps. As a result, secure use of the service is not easy for many.

On August 19th 2019 from 07:45 (UTC+2) onwards, some services won’t be available. Etherpad, Jitsi and Matrix will be unavailable until 12:00 (UTC+2). This is due to necessary maintenance work.
We have been running our own Matrix server in a test phase for a few months now. Matrix is a decentralized messenger service that can be used for end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) communication. As of today, any person who already has an email address with us can use this service.
