Chat rooms in Matrix need to be updated

Chat rooms in Matrix have “room versions”. They determine the rules of a room (moderation, security, features). New versions fix security vulnerabilities and enable features. They only take effect when the room is upgraded to the new version. This also applies to direct messages between two people.

Why update to version 12 now?

Security: Version 12 closes important gaps in authorization rules.
Stability: Fewer error-prone states, more reliable moderation.
Future: Newer features and better compatibility.

How do I update a room in Element?

View the current version: Room → Settings → Advanced → “Room Version”.
Upgrade: Send the command /upgraderoom 12 in the room and confirm.
Permissions: Room admins or the room creator can usually upgrade.
Preparation: Inform everyone in the room and ensure that the latest Matrix clients are being used.

What happens?

A new room will be created with the selected version.
A notice with a link to the new room will appear in the old room.
Important settings (name, topic, avatar, joining rules, encryption, power levels, bans) will be retained.
The old message history will remain in the old room (archive). New messages will be sent to the new room. Members must join the new room (via a link).
